Former National and Border champions Andy Mackarel and Liam Higgins took a clear win in the first Navigation Trial of the New Year, coming home three marks clear of their nearest rival in Co Monaghan MC’s event based on Ardaghey.

Most of the leading crews stayed unpenalised for three quarters of the 80 mile route, but two tricky sections near the end provided a sting in the tail, and the winning pair used all their experience to come out ahead of Garreth Beagan/Stephen Thornton and Mickey Carbin/Evin Hughes, who finished second and third.
