Derek Daly has an impressive Motorsport pedigree and he will be at Mondello Park in mid-August to present his “What if It’s You?” One-Hour Driver Development Seminar. There is no cost for this seminar but places are limited.

Daly was born and raised in Dublin, Ireland. He competed as a professional race car driver for 17 years before becoming a television motor sports personality and businessman. Derek raced in Formula One, Indy Car and World Sports Cars.

He went from being a labourer in the iron ore mines of Australia in 1973 to living in a school bus in 1976 to being ranked 10th in the Formula One World Championship in 1980. Along the way, he won the British Formula Ford Festival and the British Formula Three championship. In 1983, Derek made his first of 6 starts at the Indianapolis 500. He also raced at the Le Mans 24 hour race in France.

In 1984, Derek survived one of the worst on track crashes ever seen, at the Michigan International Speedway. He endured fourteen surgeries and spent three years in therapy before returning full time to racing in 1987. In 1990, Derek won the prestigious Sebring 12 hour endurance. Just for good measure, he won it again in 1991. He retired from competition in 1992.


The One-Hour Driver Development Seminar will take place on Saturday, 17th August at 6:00pm in Suite 1, Mondello Park.

Aimed at helping young drivers and their families map out a plan to progress in professional motorsports, “What if It’s You?” provides an explanation of the steps and skill sets needed to succeed.

Daly’s unique presentation will give attendees an acute understanding of the challenges and opportunities they can expect to face when transitioning from grassroots racing to the professional ranks, including: 

  • The key skills needed to be a professional driver
  • How to create a commercial platform as a driver moves up the motor-racing ranks 
  • How to position oneself for success with teams and manufacturers
