Breen ready for WRC title challenge in France

Waterford driver Craig Breen heads to France this weekend within reach of the top of the World Rally Championship Academy standings with two rallies left this season.  Breen halved leader Egon Kaur’s lead at the last event in Germany and the Estonian only leads the Championship by 26 points going into this weekend’s WRC round in France.

Breen, a former Motorsport Ireland Young Driver of the Year, has shown his potential throughout the WRC Academy events, but in the past two events in Germany and Finland, Breen realised his class with a first and second placed finish.  This has reigned in Kaur who won the first three rounds, which were held on his favoured gravel surface.

21-year-old Breen showed his speed when the Championship switched to tarmac in the last round and he will again be on his favoured surface this weekend, the penultimate round of the WRC Academy.

Since his victory in Germany, Breen has kept up his form competing at the Barum Czech Rally Zlin, round 7 of the Intercontinental Rally Championship, where he finished in an impressive 7th position.  This form has put Breen in confident form ahead of this weekend.

"The title fight is wide open" stated Irish WRC Academy participant Craig Breen in a recent interview for wrc.com,  “I was determined to win in Germany after the second place finish in Finland and the victory became even more important as we have halved Egon’s (Kaur) lead”.

In the past few weeks Breen has been focusing on his fitness to ensure he is in peak condition for Rally de France.  “I have been working in the gym, in the pool and on the bike and I was in PRO Performance in the UK last week to put the finishing touches to my physical conditioning for this weekend,” Breen said.

The 23 stage Rally de France begins tomorrow morning (Friday) and finishes on Sunday afternoon.  For more information see www.wrc.com/wrc-academy or www.craigbreen.com
