Jack Byrne from Tinahely has been selected as the Young Racing Driver of the Month for July. The 19 year-old Wicklow driver had done little racing earlier this year, but he certainly made up for it at the Formula Vee Festival meeting at Mondello Park.

Jack drove his Sheane VW in no fewer than seven races over the course of the two days, including qualifying races, championship rounds and two heats and the final of the Festival, where he finished tenth, among all the top Formula Vee drivers in the country.

The teenager started racing in 2013, at the age of 16, and has largely stayed faithful to the Vee class, although he has also driven a Peugeot 205 and a Fiat Punto in Future Classics races. His favourite race so far is his debut outing at Kirkistown, when he beat his father Ger in a similar car.

Jack’s sponsor is his father’s business, Abbeylawn Garden Products of Tinahely. He is currently in year two of his studies in Design & Communication Graphics Teaching and Woodwork at GMIT in Letterfrack, Co Galway.

Having been selected as the fourth Driver of the Month for the 2016 season, Jack is now a contender for the prestigious Motorsport Ireland Young Racing Driver of the Year Award and the historic Sexton Trophy. This award is presented annually and is supported by Sport Ireland (formerly the Irish Sports Council) and Motorsport Ireland.
