Probably the best day’s racing for many years took place at Mondello Park today, but sadly, because of Covid 19 restrictions, there were no spectators present to enjoy the action. As well as the tremendous battles and place changing, there were new record lap times set in no fewer than five of the classes, with Limerick’s Paul O’Connell getting within a quarter of a second of the outright circuit record which has stood since 1997.
O’Connell won the first of two races for the fastest class in current use, Boss Formula Libre, two seconds ahead of Cian Carey, with Barry Rabbitt a distant third. However, in race two, Rabbitt came out on top after fifteen minutes of constant drama, with Carey, O’Connell and the Meath driver passing and repassing until finally, Rabbitt took the chequered flag less than half a second in front.
New class records went to O’Connell, Alex Denning, David Reynolds, William Kellett, and Shane Murphy, with Michael Cullen, Alastair Kellett and Shane Murphy each scoring double wins in their class.
