Cian Caldwell Ready for Europe After Memorable Launch Day

The Motorsport Ireland Rally Academy driver officially launched his 2026 European Rally Championship season with his co-driver Paul McPhillips in front of family, friends, sponsors, and rally enthusiasts on a memorable afternoon in Co. Monaghan.

Last Sunday, Rally School Ireland played host to the official launch of Cian Caldwell’s 2026 ERC campaign, and the weather couldn’t have been more fitting. With the sun out and the track busy all afternoon, the event brought together everyone who has been part of the 21-year-old’s rally journey so far, for what turned out to be a very special day.

Guests were treated to passenger runs around the circuit with Cian and other drivers, giving supporters a real taste of what it feels like to sit alongside a driver competing at European level. An M-Sport service vehicle — used during events to keep the rally cars in top condition between stages — was on display, giving fans an up-close look at the professional operation behind the campaign. Add in a raffle with prizes, music, plus plenty of tea, coffee, food and good company, and the afternoon had something for everyone.

The event was hosted by Kevin Glendinning from the popular Krunching Gears podcast, who kept the programme moving with a series of conversations that gave the occasion real depth. Motorsport Ireland president Aiden Harper was among the guests, joining Cian’s father Darren Caldwell on stage to reflect on what this ERC campaign means — not just for Cian, but for Irish rallying more broadly. It’s very much a family affair in the Caldwell household: Cian’s brother Ryan is also active in the sport, competing in the Motorsport Ireland Junior Rally Series this season, making them a true rallying family through and through.

Cian arrives at ERC level in the best possible shape. His 2025 season in a Peugeot 208 Rally4 delivered three national titles — the Motorsport Ireland Junior Rally Series Championship, the National Rally Championship, and the Irish Forestry Championship — and he wasted no time showing what he can do in the Fiesta Rally3, taking a class win on the Galway International Rally ahead of his European debut.

He and co-driver Paul McPhillips, also an Academy member, will compete in five rounds of the ERC Championship. Before the season opener, the crew will compete at Rallye La Llana on April 10–11 as a shakedown, ahead of Round 1 at Rally Sierra Morena in Spain the following weekend.

A special word of thanks goes to David and Malachy Smith and the whole team at Rally School Ireland for hosting the event with such warmth and professionalism. It was a fantastic venue for a fantastic occasion.
