Daniel Kelleher took on the FIA Karting World Championship at Sweden’s Åsum Ring in Kristianstad, representing Kart Republic in the OK category.
Renowned for its fast and flowing layout, the Åsum Ring provided a stern test for the world’s best direct-drive karters, with south-east Sweden’s unpredictable September weather adding another layer of challenge to the single-event championship showdown.
The Irish driver showcased his potential on the world stage as he lined up against 105 of the planet’s best young drivers. In qualifying, the 105 participants were divided into three groups and Daniel Kelleher made perfect use of the 1221 metres of the Åsum Ring to set an excellent lap of 49.185. The Irishman did not know it yet, but this benchmark time would not be beaten.
Kelleher went on to finish second in the qualifying heats after a last minute leap by the driver he was having a neck and neck battle with having the same amount of wins. After having claimed pole position and dominating Saturday’s heats, a difficult final left him classified 15th overall.
Forty-five nations from five continents were represented in this year’s championship, underlining the prestige of the FIA Karting World Championship. Open to drivers aged 14 and over, the OK category was widely regarded as the pinnacle of direct-drive karting, often the final stepping stone before graduating to single-seaters. With both rookies and seasoned competitors on the grid, the level of competition was intense.
The 2025 Mondokart.com World Championship – OK & OK Junior ran from 11–14 September, with both categories in action across a packed weekend of heats and finals.
