Hoey and Doherty secure final Sexton Trophy nominations
The two final selections for the 2025 Sexton Trophy Young Racing Driver of the Year award nominees have now been chosen with the selection of the final monthly nomination and wildcard, as adjudicated by a panel appointed by Motorsport Ireland.
October: Logan Hoey
16-year-old Logan Hoey from Dundalk, Co. Louth is currently a 5th year student in the Patrician High School in Carrickmacross. Hoey impressed in the Patch Tyre Equipment MINI Junior Challenge this year taking a win in the October meeting in Mondello on his way to runner up spot in the Championship.
Wilcard: Ronan Doherty
Ballymena’s Ronan Doherty (22) secured a wildcard nomination following his performances in the Northern Ireland FF1600 Championship. In the final year of a Business degree in Queen’s University, Belfast, Doherty also made a successful return to Formula Vee, winning the coveted Leinster Trophy in September.
These two final nominees join the previously announced Fionn McLaughlin, Jason Smyth, Sean McGovern, Victor Cullen, TJ Taaffe and Leo Richardson in the race to secure the Sexton Trophy.
All nominees will undertake a formal interview process in late November with a panel of judges representing Motorsport Ireland, Sport Ireland, the Motorsport Ireland Race Commission, and members of the media.
The Motorsport Ireland Young Racing Driver of the Year award and the historic Sexton Trophy are presented to the individual who has demonstrated the most potential to represent Ireland at home and internationally both on the track as well as in the public eye. This year, the structure of the award has changed, whereby the winner will receive a €42,500 support package to help develop their motor racing career, but for the first time, monetary prizes are awarded for the first and second runners-up at €5,000 and €2,500 respectively.
The overall winner of the 2025 award will be announced at the Motorsport Ireland Champions Awards Lunch in December. The award is presented annually and is supported by Sport Ireland and Motorsport Ireland.
