International Women’s Day at Irish Rallycross Championship
The sun shone brightly for the 2nd day of the Rallycross Championship at Mondello Park, perfectly timed with International Women’s Day. It was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the women who volunteer and get involved in motorsport!
A huge shoutout to Aine Phelan, Clerk of the Course, whose leadership and dedication ensured the event ran flawlessly. From competing at the Mayo Stages Rally to managing Mondello Park, and even Clerk of the Course at a Sporting Trial the weekend before, Aine’s commitment to the sport is inspiring.
We also want to highlight Ruth Nugent, Chief Marshal for the day, who coordinated the marshals and organised the all-female corner crew. Ruth’s experience from Mondello Park to Formula 1 Grand Prix events abroad and her encouragement of new volunteers made the day even more special.
It was fantastic to see the all-female corner marshals, including those experiencing their first day at Mondello Park they were excited, engaged, and thoroughly enjoyed the experience! Their teamwork and professionalism added a special energy to the event and perfectly showcased women’s vital roles across motorsport.
A successful weekend for Abbie McGuinness as she finished second in her final after mechanical issues meant she sat out for heats during the day to save the car for the final! There was great driving by Leah McManus & Ailish Sexton in their Mini Coopers. McManus was flying in the IRX Mini Graduates class with Sexton fighting her way through the IRX Juniors grid. Elaine Kirwan was pushing hard all day in her Toyota Starlet in the Autocross class.
Motorsport offers opportunities for both men and women in many varied roles, and initiatives like the Motorsport Ireland Women in Motorsport Commission continue to inspire and support greater participation.
