O’Grady Claims Snetterton Double to Strengthen GB4 Championship Lead
Loughrea’s aspiring Formula 1 driver Alex O’Grady delivered a superb double victory at round five of the GB4 Championship at Snetterton last weekend, strengthening his position at the top of the championship standings.
The KMR Sport teenager capitalised on misfortune for chief title rival Fred Green to take victory in the opening race before producing a composed drive under sustained pressure to win race two from pole position.
Green led the opening six laps of race one from pole, but his challenge unravelled when he slowed dramatically on lap seven. O’Grady seized the opportunity, taking over at the front and controlling the remainder of the contest to secure victory and open up a significant advantage in the championship.
O’Grady started race two from pole position, with the start delayed after two cars spun on the original formation lap. When racing eventually got underway, the Loughrea driver made a strong getaway.
His early advantage was quickly wiped out, however, when teammate Lily-May Watkins was pitched into the air at Wilson corner following contact involving Michael Koh. Watkins’ car was left stranded in the runoff area, prompting an interruption to the action.
When racing resumed at the end of lap two, O’Grady again reacted well, immediately establishing a half-second advantage over Green.
The championship rival refused to let O’Grady escape, applying relentless pressure throughout the remainder of the race. Green closed into the slipstream approaching the Brundle and Nelson complex on lap three but was unable to find a way through.
The intensity of the battle was evident when O’Grady locked a brake at Wilson on the following lap. Despite having Green constantly in his mirrors, the KMR Sport driver maintained his composure and held firm at the front.
O’Grady ultimately crossed the line less than half a second clear of his rival to complete a memorable Snetterton double and further strengthen his GB4 Championship challenge.
The two victories mark another significant step in the Loughrea teenager’s progression through the junior single-seater ranks as he continues his ambition of climbing the motorsport ladder towards Formula 1.
