Introduction to Co-Driving Programme Opens with Strong Attendance in Monaghan

An initiative from the Women in Motorsport Commission in collaboration with the Rallies Commission, Navigation Commission, and the Motorsport Ireland Rally Academy, got off to a fantastic start with an action-packed session at the Four Seasons Hotel Monaghan on Friday April 10th. This evening focused on Night Navigation Trials and Endurance Trials elaborating on how these disciplines provide co-drivers with excellent opportunity and fundamental experience for anyone wishing to embark on a co-driver journey.

Evin Hughes (co-driver and five-times Night Navigation champion) delivered a brilliant session on Night Navigation, giving participants hands-on experience at map plotting and sharing key tips to master the challenges of navigating in the dark. Susan Smyth (Rally & Endurance Trial co-driver, Night Navigation Class Champion) followed with an extensive insight on the role of co-driver at Endurance Trials.  This session focused on sharing practical advice to help newcomers avoid common pitfalls as they get started.

A big thank you to Junior World Rally Championship Co-driver Conor Mohan, who relayed his journey from his days as Night Navigation co-driver to rally co-driver on the world stage. Conor also delivered a very informative session on the interpretation of Tulip Diagrams and how to use the Road book, an essential element for all co-drivers.

Brecan McBreen, Scrutineer from the Motorsport Ireland Panel of Scrutineers briefed the group on key Scrutineering and Safety checks, procedures, and best practices to ensure competitors stay safe and compliant at events.

Those attending were provided with a small co-driver starter bag with some of the key tools e.g. Map Roamer etc.

The evening marked a positive first step for many newcomers, with strong engagement and enthusiasm throughout. Plans are already underway for a follow-up session focusing on rally co-driving, which will be announced shortly, keep an eye on the Motorsport Ireland website and social media for updates!
