RIP Paul Phelan (1948-2026)
It is with deep regret that Motorsport Ireland announce the passing of Paul Phelan (19/11/1948 - 27/06/2026).
Paul was a well loved and highly respected member of the motorsport community with over sixty years of contributions and competitions. He dovetailed his career as a world-class navigator with long stints in the Motorsport Ireland office and Trials Drivers Club, as well as writing for Motoring News, The Irish Times, and other publications.
He was perhaps best known for his 1975 Circuit of Ireland victory navigating for the great Billy Coleman in a Ford Escort Mk1 RS1600, and subsequent sixteen National Navigation Championship titles.
In 2022, Paul was awarded the Presidential Medal for his lifetime contributions to motorsport as well as recognition by ANICC Autotest Specialist Subcommittee.
Paul was a beloved friend to all cats during his time and was known as a man with a keen eye for detail and numbers. He will be missed and remembered by all.
